① Product Description
The glaze catches the light differently depending on the angle — turquoise shifting, just slightly, like an afternoon ocean seen across the sand. Like sunlight wavering in the shallows, there's a quiet movement living inside this color.
No decoration. No pattern. Nothing extra. Just this color, spreading all the way to the rim in silence.
Wheel-thrown by Masahito Date at his studio in Kitanakagusuku, the plate is dipped in a single coat of turquoise glaze and fired once at high temperature. The depth of color comes from how the glaze pools slightly at the well's center and thins toward the rim — a difference of just a millimeter, but enough to give the whole surface a sense of breathing.
Since moving to San Francisco, I'm not sure I've ever felt the color of Okinawa's ocean this close. At the rim of the foot ring, the bare clay shows through — warm, unglazed, raw — and the contrast makes the turquoise even more vivid.
Eight sun (about 25 cm) — the size traditional Okinawan households reach for at every meal. Big enough for a main course, small enough not to dominate the table. The kind of plate you don't think about. You just use it. Every day.
And that's exactly why I want to eat alongside this color — every single day. That's why I chose this plate.
