The moment I saw this mug, I thought of two things: the sky above my island, and the ground beneath my feet.
The deep cobalt blue sweeping across the top — that's the Okinawan sky. The sky I grew up under. The kind of blue that you don't find anywhere else in the world. It pours over the rim and fills the inside, like looking up on the clearest summer day.
And then, below the glaze, the clay itself comes through. Warm, raw, earthy — the color of Okinawa's red soil. The same earth my grandparents farmed. The same ground under every banyan tree I climbed as a kid.
Between the two: a haze of sage green, soft and quiet, like the hills in the middle distance.
Sky and earth, in your hands — every morning.
And that little spiral curl at the base of the handle? To me, it's the salt wind off the coast. The one that's always there, even when I'm 6,000 miles away in San Francisco.
