The first time I saw this plate, I thought: this is what cool looks like.
Crafted by the artisans at Ikutouen — through their contemporary line, Kamany — this striking matte-black rectangular plate is decorated with a traditional karakusa arabesque carved line by line into the clay. The technique is called senbori. As each groove is cut, the pale clay beneath emerges, and the result is a vivid white arabesque that floats against the deep matte black like ink against fresh paper.
The gently raised edges frame your food the way a gallery frames a painting. Set a single slice of cheesecake here and it instantly looks like something from a boutique café. Lay down a few pieces of nigiri and they look like they were waiting for this exact stage. That's the quiet magic of this plate.
Black works beautifully with any food color — greens become brighter, pastels softer, sauces shine like little jewels. Even the simplest meal feels a little more intentional, a little more considered.

Stoneware clay with lead-free glaze. The surface is finished in a deep matte-black glaze and decorated with karakusa (arabesque vines) carved into the body line by line in the senbori technique, revealing the pale natural clay beneath. Lead- and cadmium-free as confirmed by the artisan.
